Assumptions
- A full year of wages at one salary, taxed as withholding rather than as a settled return.
- The federal figure applies the standard deduction for the filing status you pick. Itemising, credits and dependants are not modelled.
- Social Security stops at the yearly wage base. Medicare has no cap and includes the additional 0.9 percent above the threshold for your filing status.
- A pretax retirement contribution lowers income tax but not Social Security or Medicare, because those apply to wages.
- City, county and school district income taxes are not included anywhere on this site.
- South Carolina tax is applied to income after any pretax contribution, with no state standard deduction, exemption or credit, because the data layer does not carry them. A filed return will usually come in lower.

Income tax in South Carolina
South Carolina exempts the first $3,560 of taxable income, taxes the next band at 3 percent, and applies 6 percent from $17,830 upward. The top rate arrives early enough that most wage income in the state meets it.
The rate has been coming down by a tenth of a point a year, subject to revenue growth, from 7 percent a few years back. South Carolina starts from federal taxable income, meaning the federal standard deduction has already reduced the base before the state rate applies, and this page does not reproduce that step. There are no local income taxes to add.
The federal figure in the table does come after a standard deduction of $16,100 for a single filer, which the state exempt band does not replace. A pretax retirement contribution lowers the income both the state and the federal schedule are applied to, and leaves Social Security and Medicare working from your full wage. Pick a pay frequency and the page divides the year into that many equal periods.
