Assumptions

  • A full year of wages at one salary, taxed as withholding rather than as a settled return.
  • The federal figure applies the standard deduction for the filing status you pick. Itemising, credits and dependants are not modelled.
  • Social Security stops at the yearly wage base. Medicare has no cap and includes the additional 0.9 percent above the threshold for your filing status.
  • A pretax retirement contribution lowers income tax but not Social Security or Medicare, because those apply to wages.
  • City, county and school district income taxes are not included anywhere on this site.
  • Maryland tax is applied to income after any pretax contribution, with no state standard deduction, exemption or credit, because the data layer does not carry them. A filed return will usually come in lower.

Income tax in Maryland

Maryland's state schedule carries ten rates from 2 percent up to 6.5 percent above $1 million, but four of them apply below $4,000 of income and so matter to almost nobody. The 4.75 percent band does the real work, stretching from $3,000 all the way to $100,000.

Every Maryland county and Baltimore City adds a local income tax on top, roughly 2.25 to 3.2 percent of taxable income, withheld with the state amount. That local piece is not in the table and adds meaningfully to the total. Maryland is one of the few places where the county rate alone can decide which side of a state line is cheaper to live on.

Those ten rates are applied here to your salary after any pretax contribution and before any Maryland credit, which the data layer does not carry. Underneath them, Social Security takes 6.2 percent until wages reach $184,500 and then stops, while Medicare takes 1.45 percent with no ceiling. The per period column divides a settled year evenly, so it will not match a Maryland pay stub cheque for cheque.

Rates and thresholds on this page apply to 2026, with the Maryland schedule as published for 2025. Last updated .
