Assumptions

  • A full year of wages at one salary, taxed as withholding rather than as a settled return.
  • The federal figure applies the standard deduction for the filing status you pick. Itemising, credits and dependants are not modelled.
  • Social Security stops at the yearly wage base. Medicare has no cap and includes the additional 0.9 percent above the threshold for your filing status.
  • A pretax retirement contribution lowers income tax but not Social Security or Medicare, because those apply to wages.
  • City, county and school district income taxes are not included anywhere on this site.
  • Florida charges no individual income tax on wages, so the state figure is zero at every salary and nothing about your filing status changes it.

Income tax in Florida

Florida has no individual income tax, and its constitution forbids introducing one without a voter approved amendment. The state row in the table stays at zero however much you earn.

That leaves federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare as the whole of what this page deducts from a Florida salary. The state raises its revenue from sales tax, tourism and property tax instead, so the trade off shows up in what you spend rather than in what you take home. No Florida county or city taxes wages either.

The federal ladder therefore does all the graduated work here. A single filer subtracts $16,100 as the standard deduction, then meets 10 percent to $12,400 of taxable income, 12 percent to $50,400, and 22 percent to $105,700. Social Security runs at 6.2 percent until wages pass $184,500, and Medicare at 1.45 percent with no cap. Whatever pay frequency you set, the page divides a finished year evenly rather than modelling a particular Florida pay run.
