Assumptions

  • The conversion is arithmetic only. No tax, no deduction and no overtime premium is applied.
  • A day is your weekly hours spread over five days.
  • Monthly and twice monthly figures divide the year evenly rather than counting the weeks in each month, which is how payroll splits a salary.
  • Unpaid time off is handled by lowering the weeks per year, not by changing the rate.

Sources

This page does no tax arithmetic, so it cites the rules on working hours rather than a rate table.

How the conversion works

The conversion rests on one number: how many paid hours you work in a year. A 40 hour week across 52 weeks gives 2,080 hours, which is the figure most salary comparisons quietly assume. Change either input and the whole thing moves. Someone working 37.5 hours over 48 paid weeks has 1,800 hours, so the same yearly salary implies a rate about 16 percent higher.

That matters most when you are comparing a contract rate against a salaried offer. A contractor quoting a rate is usually paid only for hours worked, so unpaid holidays and sick days come out of the weeks per year rather than out of the rate. Setting weeks to 48 or 46 instead of 52 is often closer to what a contract year looks like.

The monthly and twice monthly figures here divide the year evenly rather than counting the weeks in each calendar month. Payroll systems work the same way, which is why a monthly salary is not four times the weekly one. A biweekly schedule pays 26 times a year, so two months in every year carry three paycheques instead of two.

After tax

Everything above is gross. To see what is left, pick your region and enter the annual figure. If the rate is for contract work rather than a job, the Canadian and United States contractor pages account for the contributions an employer would otherwise have covered.
